Your tongue helps you speak, eat, swallow and breathe well. It plays a huge role in your life, but have you ever asked yourself, is it functioning properly? Do I have the required proper resting posture? Think about it!
The tongue is made of eight muscle pairs - that is 16 muscles that need to coordinate with one another for success. If they are not functioning in harmony they can create an incorrect swallowing pattern and lead to compensations or prevent the tongue from assisting with proper breathing.
The way the tongue works can greatly impact your health, your sleep, your digestion and even your physical appearance. Proper resting position can have a major impacts on growth of the upper jaw and palate through the gentle chronic force of the tongue.
When the tongue is in the proper position, doing its job, it helps create a large optimal airway. On the flip side, when the tongue is low in the mouth - this guides growth down and back which can result in a recessed chin, smaller jaws, and in turn a smaller airway.
Over time this growth pattern can predispose a person to conditions like sleep apnea, upper airway resistance syndrome, a grinding and clenching habit and more.
This is why myofunctional therapy can change your life.

Based in Overland Park, KS. Optimized Airways is located in a Kansas suburb of Kansas City, MO.

As a mom, and a healthcare professional, I was struggling to get answers to issues surrounding sleep and oral habits with my kids and frustrated with answers from traditional healthcare/educators. When I learned how important the power of nasal breathing can be not just for their sleep but for their growth and development I knew I needed to help share this knowledge with other parents and adults alike.
Who knew that helping my kids breathe and sleep better could turn into a company with a mission to help others achieve the same goals! In 2023, I opened Optimized Airways to be just that, a place for people to learn how powerful correct function can be. Form follows function, and so my job is to teach simple functional changes that can change the way you live for the better!
